Cabo San Lucas, the gem of Mexico.

  • How to get there: Continental Airlines has direct flights from New York. Alaska Airlines and American Airlines both fly direct from Los Angeles. American and Mexicana fly direct from Dallas. Delta from Atlanta. American Airlines from Chicago. (SJD is the airport code) Cabo San Lucas is approximately 20 miles southwest of the Los Cabos International Airport. The telephone area code is 624.
  • Time difference: Mountain Time Zone. The time changes here whenever Daylight Savings Time changes.
  • Best Time to Go: The climate is arid with 300 or more days of sunshine. Rain is rare, and usually occurs in September and October.Even though rain isn't much of an issue, be mindful of hurricane season from the end of July-early August to the beginning of November. The average year-round temperature is 78F. During high season, which runs from October through April, the temperature is normally 80F in the day and cools into the 60's at night. From May to September, the temperature will go up into the low 100's during the day and stay in the upper 70's and low 80's at night. From late December to March, gray whales swim from cold Alaska waters down to the tip of the Baja Peninsula.
  • What to Buy: Silver, ceramics and crafts. The currency is the Mexican Peso. Cabo is more about enjoying the weather; its golf courses, beaches and sports.
  • What to Wear: Casual. You might dress a bit for dinner at some of the nicer restaurants and resorts.
  • Recommended Activities: Fishing is the sport that put Cabo San Lucas on the map and is spectacular year round. Stripped Marlin, Dorado, Tuna and Shark can be caught any time. From June to December: Black Marlin and Blue Marlin. April to November: Sailfish. Golf is another main attraction, due to the areas reliable weather, dramatic courses with dessert and ocean views and suitable greens for all levels.
